Days Inn in Chester

and tomorrow (tuesday) night i will be on my way to Shannon, Ireland.

the Irish countryside around around Shannon a few minutes before landing.

not sure if i will make it to Killaloe for the lunch time concert featuring local singer Helen Hayes but i am sure i will find a "session" or two on wednesday night for some good music and a wee pint of Guiness. and if all goes well, i will be home on the 3rd, for sure by the morning of the 4th. more later.

"all my bags were/are packed . . .

. . . and i was ready to go."  i should be on my way Ireland tonite but i called in "sick" early this morning.  a couple of days ago, i started having the same problem i experienced in Kyoto in 2004. and if you remember that, it was not a good thing but it finally went away.  i thought perhaps it was a food allergy. . . beer with okonomiyaki.  and i don't even drink.  but, being the "good guest" i drank some Asahi with home-cooked okonomiyaki.  and that is when the problem with my throat started.  eventually i got over it but it happened again a couple of weeks later at another friend's home (some of Noriko's relatives in Nara) when i had the same combination of beer and food. (i love okonomiyaki and beer really does taste good with it).  that was when i was staying about a month in Kyoto to see the autumn leaves... aki dakara which is Japanese for "it is autumn, and that's why i am here."  i had some very long night's not being able to sleep in my simple 6-tatami mat room   skip forward to a couple of mornings ago when i started having the same problem.  skip forward to this morning when i choose to stay home for a few more days and rest my throat.  it does feel better now.  if it gets worse, i will see a doctor. (yeah, right).  if it feels better, i will be on my way to Ireland on tuesday night.  so, that is why i am home now with my bags packed and not in Philadelphia getting ready to check-in for my crew briefing for the 910p flight to Shannon.  as for yesterday, my favorite pair of flip flops broke as i was hurrying to the bus in Santa Monica.  actually only one flip flopped but it was a little awkward walking with one flip on and one flop off.  perhaps i should have bought this pair that i took a photo of earlier in Venice Beach.

and why was i in Venice Beach on a thursday afternoon?  i was rollerskating to Santa Monica pier to see The Bonedaddys in the first concert of the Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series.  they were very entertaining as was the first band, the Crown City Rockers.

coincidence?. . . yes, that's what coincidences are

on page A8 of my local paper today is a little article about the sale of the painting, "Le bassin aux nymph Deas" or "Water Lily Pond" by the impressionist master Claude Monet.
the painting was sold yesterday in London at Christie's for $80,451,178.  the painting was signed in 1919 by the artist.  i read the article after returning from the first concert in the Wild Wednesday's series at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center.  after the concert, i walked to the Pine Wind Garden which is the Japanese garden connected to the cultural center and took the above photo (and a few more).  of course, you can have my water lily photo for free.  just send a self-addressed stamped envelope to . . .

the other coincidence involved Wayne sitting at my table in front of the stage. Wayne is the soon-to-be 90 year old world traveller, music fan, retired professor that i met at the Palos Verdes Street Festival a few weeks ago.  i arrived at the concert about 15 minutes early. . . the #8 Torrance bus was right on time and dropped me of a few minutes from the cultural center.  i choose a empty table close to one of the speakers but also at a good angle to take some photos and video.  two well dressed older woman sat down across from me just as i was sitting down.  and then about 5 minutes later, i see Wayne walking towards us.  he doesn't see me (or recognize me) but knows one of the women.  apparently he went to school with her. she is 87 years old.  i found all this out after the concert when i finally told Wayne who i was.  we only met the one time but we have been exchanging emails and photos.  he had a wonderful trip to China back in April and has been sending photos from that trip.  he offered to give me a ride (yes, all three of these senior citizens still drive... and i do not even have a car) home but i wanted to get a little exercise by walking to Target. it was then that i remembered the Japanese garden.  and i was glad i did as i had never been there at the right time to see the water lilies in bloom. coincidence... ぐぜん、ね。

is it monday yet?

what a weekend!  the big music festival in Pasadena on saturday.  more about all that including the story and song by Brad Colerick. . ."is there paper in heaven?" i talked to his wife after his performance and told her how moving the song was. she said it was a true story, basically.
this is a photo of her holding her daughter while watching her husband Brad sing. she had such a happy content loving look on her face.  priceless.

more about losing my back-up battery that i bought for my digital camera in Japan... a little too expensive to be losing... but, then i lost the camera that it was originally bought for on my adventure to Austin way back at the beginning of June. you don't need to follow all that just know after checking, re-checking and re-re-checking my backpack for it at the festival, i found it (in the pocket i put it in so i would not lose it) in my backpack when i finally made it home and dumped everything out onto the floor.  more about all the singer/songwriter/musicians at the Americana Stage in the Armory Center for the Arts, and the local LA jazz singer who started off the free concert season at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park.  and the Brazilian reggae band with a touch of gospel at Paseo Colorado, the sweet-voiced Meiko followed by the refreshingly entertaining but hard-to-categorize music of Jesca Hoop at the Emerging Artist Stage.  and finally i missed the Latin Jazz sounds of Bobby Rodriquez at Levitt Pavilion under the stars but i could hear it from the Memorial Metro Station.  i have seen Mr. Rodriquez and his trumpet at the sunday jazz brunch at The Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa Beach a couple of times which is why i chose to stay and hear Jesca Hoop before hurrying to the metro station.  i could have listened to the last hour of the jazz in the park but it had been a very long day.  i had thought about staying out all night like in Austin but i wanted to be home to get ready for the sunday festivals in Redondo Beach.  and i was tired.  little did i know it would take about 3 hours to get home using four different subway lines and riding on two buses.

now i will move ahead to sunday and then the summer festival in Riviera Village (downtown Redondo Beach).  more photos to be added this week.  it was another hot day but not as hot as the day before in Pasadena.  here is a view of a few people staying or trying to stay cool near the Redondo Beach pier.  the rest of the beach is not that crowded.  only this area near the pier was packed like this... i think it has to do with the big parking garage for the pier and for public transportation to the pier area.

i put my rollerskates on as the band, The Rogues were playing there last song before their break. i  rollerskated north along the bike path (the above photo is from the south side of Redondo Pier).  as i approached Hermosa Beach i choose to skate on Hermosa Avenue as opposed the Hermosa Beach bike path. . . too many people, too many distractions, too many photo opportunities to slow me down.  i wanted to hear at least an hour of the music at the Metlox shopping/dining area in Manhattan Beach for the last of the summer outdoor jazz and art event.  same place as last week but a different jazz band. more good music.  more photos.  the jazz was over at 4pm and i had good intentions of skating back to the summer festival for the last band starting around 430pm but i stopped by the Manhattan Beach pier where i watched some entertaining beach volleyball and took a couple of interesting actions shots. . .

now heading south towards Hermosa Beach, i took this shot while skating primarily for the art work.  primarily.
can you see the tattoo?  think ukiyo-e.

at Naja's at the International Boardwalk area of the Redondo Beach pier i listened to the Land Sharks.  they play every sunday at this hole-in-the-wall bar frequented by hole-in-the-wall patrons.  i left just after their encore, an a cappella version of Janis Joplin's..."oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz..." which everyone inside and outside the bar within hearing distance sang along to. i finally made it back to Redondo Beach about 45 minutes before sunset. if i wasn't so tired i would have stayed to watch the sunset.  but, if i missed the bus around 810p, i would have to wait until around 915p for the next bus.  yes, it is sometimes a little inconvenient not having a car... he said while walking past the gas station where gas has risen to $4.55 for regular unleaded.  i could have walked back home but it was another long day in the sun.  two long fun days in the hot summer sun back to back and one 6 hour walk a couple days before that. of course, if i was in better shape i could have skated home.

i got off the bus near the Subway... the sandwich shop not the metro for dinner. this motel is on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) surprisingly near to where i live.  it looks better at night with the neon lights.

could you see the two tired squirrels in the first photo?  that is how Tony and i felt last night after a fun music-filled sun-drenched weekend. it was a lazy day for me today except for getting my "bids" done for my August work schedule. i had to do some checking of festivals and music concerts on the intenet before i could try to arrange my schedule.  the Tattoo, The Fringe, The Jazz and Blues Festivals in Scotland.  the Stern Grove concerts in San Francisco. etcetera at etcetera locations. Mike called to remind me that our "bids" were due today. we caught up a little before he had to check on the kids and do some much needed yardwork.  i did a load of laundry. Chris called and left a message (i was in the laundry room) to tell me "the car" will be in the employee lot until he can get the brakes fixed. and then i did dishes from friday.  and i had to walk to the market for some groceries (that no car thing).  Steve called to invite me to dinner with the kids but i had just started my simple pasta dinner. i have been home for over a week and no phone calls and then three in one day. that was my lazy monday.  i think tuesday will be about the same but i think i will schedule a nap sometime in the early afternoon especially if this heat continues.  there will be music on wednesday and thursday. and then i may be leaving for Philly on friday, at the latest saturday morning.  my saturday trip is in the evening to Shannon again.  subject as always to change.

Tony meeys Meiko

or is it. . . Meiko gets to meet Tony.

Meiko singing...no, not the hot dog song... maybe in another post.  i think this song was a new song called "boys with girlfriends"

another fun but long  music-filled day is just about over me.  more about everything tomorrow (later today as it is already tomorrow for me).   it was all about the music today at the Make Music Pasadena-A fete de la Musique Event. and it was all about the heat. i didn't hear any temperatures but i would say around 100F.  there were many highlights today but the three hours it took me to return from Pasadena was not one of them.  more about the music and the metro tomorrow... or later.

by going there, i ended up here

something about Stuart McLean's soothing and familiar voice put me to sleep or shall i say back to sleep. i will have to listen again tomorrow to The Vinyl Cafe on CBC Radio One to hear this week's show again.  it featured stories from children and advice on writing and some beautiful music (Stuart's new favorite group/choir) from a Vancouver group/choir callled Choir Practice. it was the line "by going there, i ended up here" that i heard just as i was re-awakening this morning.  perhaps, it was the combination of staying up late trying to organize my photos on my computer and "free-up" some space on my digital camera's card in preparation for today's and tomorrow's art and music festivals in Pasadena and Redondo Beach and Stuart's voice that caused me to fall back asleep after tuning into the CBC on the internet this morning at 7am. now it is time to get ready for another fun but long day.  i am pretty sure i have decided to take the 444 bus to downtown and then transfer to the Gold Line to Memorial Park in Pasadena for the Make Music Festival.  coming home will be a little more complicated but i think i will take the Gold Line to the Red Line or Purple Line to the Blue Line to the Green Line and hopefully catch up to the 232 bus which runs from LAX to Long Beach along the Pacific Coast Highway.  that is my plan... subject to change.  everything changes.

and i am quoting . . .

"...but those expecting to beat June gloom entirely maybe be let down.  despite the heat, some beachgoers said they were disappointed by the marine layer that hugged the coast into thursday afternoon."  that was from today's front page of my local paper the Daily Breeze.  and that was about yesterday.  in yesterday's blog entry i wrote that it was a beautiful day and no June gloom.  well, as you can see from these two photos, i was wrong.  but, it was mainly over the beach area.

my walk to the market took about. . . 6 hours.  i walked up the hill behind where i live to my favorite street to walk on, and then back down and over to Malaga Cove hoping to see some wild peacocks, and then back up another hill where David Benoit lived (i think i heard from someone that he and his wife Kei had a new bigger and better house built somewhere in the same beautiful neighborhood) which over looks the ocean, back down the hill to the beach, back up the hill, thru another botanical-garden-like neighborhood to my grocery store and then back home.  but before going home and with my backpack full of groceries i walked passed the entrance to my apartment complex to the next street down interestingly called Ocean to take some sunflowers photos that i knew would be backlit by the sun. as you can see the sky was a beautiful blue and i found these clouds most interesting and photogenic.  it was these clouds which altered my walk around 10am to the beach and market as i decided to get "closer" to them by walking up the hill which is kind of between me and the beach. kind of.

this photo kind of shows my journey to my market. (without the cool clouds and cooler June gloom).

i found this passion flower growing wild(ly) somewhere on my walk back down one of the hills...luckily i was a little lost or i would have never found this exquisite beauty.

as you can see the June gloom did finally disappear
